Keeping your cigars at the right temperature at all times

Whether you've been smoking cigars for years, or have recently become obsessed with them, or you're looking for a gift for that special someone, a humidor is just what you need to keep your favourite cigars looking their best.

As with many accessories for cigar smoking, the humidor's prices and quality vary. You can buy a poorly made humidor which is basically nothing more than a box that won't keep your cigars safe from the elements and costs very little. You can buy a suitable medium priced model for the job. If it's within your budget, you can buy a high-end heirloom-quality piece of art that is both a showpiece and an excellent humidor.

Thermostats are more than just a place to store your cigars, so they are close by and ready to be enjoyed. As you probably already know, the cigar is there to keep your cigars fresh. Smoking is about providing pleasure and smoking a quality cigar is a truly enjoyable endeavour. All of this can be spoiled by careless cigar storage.

In order to maintain the flavour of your cigars, the cigar creator intends to store your cigars in a recreated native environment. The key to making your collection of fine cigars as tasty as the day you bought them is to control the humidity and temperature of the environment in which they are stored.

A hygrometer allows you to monitor the temperature and humidity with devices called a thermometer and hygrometer respectively, allowing for control. You will know if your cigar is in the right environment and if it is not, you can take steps to change it. When the temperature and humidity are exactly right, the seal on your humidor locks in the freshness and protects your collection from the elements.

70° is the optimum temperature to ensure the freshness of your collection. Regulating the temperature is necessary to prevent rotting or shaking the tobacco content of your cigars. High temperatures can lead to rotting and promote the growth of cigar beetles, especially in high humidity. If your cigars are stored at temperatures above 77° and humidity above 75%, then cigar beetle eggs may hatch and destroy the entire collection, which can be a very costly loss.
Low temperatures directly affect the packaging of cigars. The impact of low and high temperatures on cigars can cause the wrapper to shrink and the wrapper to break. If your cigars are stored in a cold, damp environment, the humidity can cause the wrapper to break.

Experts agree that cigars should be stored at between 65% and 72% humidity. When a cigar is made, it contains between 12 and 15 per cent moisture. If the tobacco is not kept moist, the cigar may be ruined.

When you collect cigars for storage at a humidity level higher than 72%, your cigars will absorb moisture. The tobacco becomes moist and your cigar swells. It is almost impossible to smoke with a wet cigar. In addition, humidity causes internal dampness, which can lead to uneven burns.

Keep your cigar in a dry environment, such as sunlight and wind, and it will burn fast and hot. The smoke gets hot, and the flavour of your favourite cigar is destroyed. If you let the cigar dry out completely, the essential oils and flavours of the tobacco will disappear.

The price of your humidor goes up when you choose built-in accessories such as hygrometers and thermometers. But it will make your life easier and maintain a constant temperature and humidity. You can easily check the cigar environment inside your humidor. Another option is to buy a separate hygrometer, but a quality hygrometer will usually have built-in accessories.

The inside of the humidor should be considered as the place where the cigars are kept fresh. In addition, the type of material used to make the humidor will have a direct impact on the humidor's ability to keep your cigars fresh. Look for humidors lined with Spanish cedar, mahogany or ocimum. They have excellent insulating properties while minimising mould growth. The exterior of a cigar box can be made from many different types of wood.

Many cigar lovers and collectors of fine products choose large capacity humidors with dividers or individual drawers. Certain cigars are chosen because of their flavour. Not all types of tobacco taste the same. To ensure that your flavours do not mix and that they do not change, you can choose a model with a dividing section or removable divider.
